1. ASP Card

To work on a construction site as a worker in Quebec, you must first take a 30 hours training course on construction site safety. Once this training is completed, you will obtain an ASP card which will allow you to work on construction sites. This training is offered in Nunavik several times a year in several communities.

Information on schedules and how to register:

Adult Education Department of the KI Regional School Board (Kativik Ilisarniliriniq)

Sanajiit department of the KRG (Kativik Regional Government)

Please note that you must be at least 16 years old to take this course.

2. CCQ Skills certificates

The second certification required to work on a construction site is the competency certificate issued by the CCQ. The CCQ (Commission de la construction du Québec) issues different skills cards depending on the type of work you want to do (carpenter, heavy machinery operator, painter, plasterer, etc.) and your level of experience ( apprentices or journeymen).

However, if you have not completed these studies, it is still possible to obtain a competency card by making a request to the CCQ accompanied by a job guarantee of 150 hours offered by an employer. We therefore invite you to contact us directly if you wish to obtain a CCQ card so we can accompany you in the process.

3. Apprentice vs companion

The construction trades governed by the CCQ have different levels of apprenticeship. In general, there are 3 levels of apprentice category (1, 2 and 3) as well as a final level which is the “companion” category.

You will therefore start your trade as apprentice 1 and once a certain number of hours have been rewarded at work, you will move on to the next category and so on until you reach the status of journeyman. Each level is associated with an hourly rate and therefore with a specific salary and this varies when you move to a higher level.

It is therefore very important to follow your CCQ file carefully and to notify your employer when you change category so that your salary is increased accordingly.
